Well to add to my bad luck with my chickens this year... now I've got a strange lump on one of my pullets. I noticed a few days ago that she was holding her wing weird and some of the feathers were sticking up at the shoulder. She isnt very friendly, but today I finally got ahold of her.

What I found (after I cut some of her feathers to see what was going on) was a HUGE 3inch long, 2 inch wide, and 1 inch think scabby lump. Right on her shoulder. it has a bunch of little scabs all over it (the blood was a few of the scabs wiped off) I dont see a single long wound or deep puncture like from an attack (we've lost 5 chickens this month due to hawks :|) and this thing showed up over night!

She is an EE about 5 months old. She has been acting normal, eating, drinking, and seems to keep up with the others just fine. She hasn't pooed since i brought her in, so i dont know if her poo looks normal. She doesnt have mites. She also hasnt started laying. So far. I just rubbed some ACV on it (my husband said it looks fungal).

One other thing to note... she has black/gray skin and this thing is white . In addition, when I first grabbed her up (beside scaring the crap out of her), she vomited clear sticky liquid on my arm. She then proceeded to make gurgling sounds for about 5 minutes.

My fingers in the following pictures are to try and show the actual size of the thing. It feels like it is right on top of her shoulder bone (and her wing isnt broken).

Should I lance it and see if anything comes out? Should I leave her be and see what happens? Should I put her down if it could be contagious? Any advice is much appreciated!

Oh to add, its hard, not squishy and feels hot to the touch.

It's either an infected wound or a squamous cancer tumor, more likely the latter. You can hope it's just an infected wound and treat her for that, and if it clears up, hooray. But if after wound treatment for a week, there is no sign of improvement, you then would likely be seeing a cancer.

Cleanse the wound daily with soap and water, rinse, and cover amply with a antibiotic ointment such as triple antibiotic salve. Keep moist and do not let it dry out. Keep her away from any chickens that want to peck the wound.

I hope it's not cancer, she is so beautiful. Ill treat it like a wound and see if it clears up or improves

If the lump is rock hard and you cut into it, it will bleed as cancer tumors have a blood supply. Puss filled wounds won't bleed except minimally on the outer skin. After cleaning and disinfecting the skin, you might make a shallow incision and try to press around it to see if blood comes out or pus.

If you get pus, then it's a wound and you will need to get as much pus out as you can, then flush the wound with saline and pack it with the wound ointment.
