Black and Lavender Orpingtons

My understanding that black and lavendar Orpingtons don't produce as much as buff Opringtons, is that correct? And are they still decent winter layers?

It all depends on their breeding. I've had show quality buff Orpingtons that didn't lay very well. The less common colors tend to not be bred for production like many hatchery buff Orpingtons are, so I would expect them to lay less and go broody. I would not count on them for good production. That being said my lavender Orpingtons laid fairly well, so it can be hit and miss.
