Black Australorps Egg Production

They only way to keep egg in I Hope is I installed 2x2 board in front of nest to try and keep the ladies from rolling them off. Maybe this will help????

When they start to lay some hens do some pretty vigorous scratching to arrange the bedding just right. They can scratch fake or real eggs or even bedding out. I've had that problem and solved it by raising the lip some. Sounds like a plan.

I now use a 4" or 5" lip on mine. That way I can keep the bedding deep enough they don't scratch it out of the way when they are forming a nest and lay on bare wood.

Yes they are all Australorps i am in Georgia no snakes this time of year. Have not tried the fake egg or golf ball trick will try it and see. Other then layer feed ans cracked corn what else should i be giving my girls for good egg layin?
I'd up to 22% protein feed. My hens have laid all winter. 4 birds most days 4 eggs. They have slowed down now as the days have been getting longer. Go figure. Remember most chickens have a certain # of eggs they lay a year. My BO is projected to lay 200 eggs a year. Now that's an average. So that means she doesn't lay 165 days a year. Now that might be spaced out or in a row. Depends on chicken and breed. I've heard (here) that Astralorps are pretty prolific. And I read somewhere with a grain of salt that some bird laid 364 eggs. OK????? You can add mealworms too. As a treat.

Well after building up the lip at front of the box, eggs still in this morning. One deposited an egg but in the same place they have been using. Will keep trying to teach them.
