Black Australorps?

Over on the behavior board there was talk of the roos being aggressive. Mine was sneaky aggressive. Not enough to bother me, but I have 6, 4, 1 year old girls. He got re-homed. Someone else had actually said theirs was doing the same. He got sold over the weekend....

Is there a way to tell the difference between the roos and pullets as chicks?

Yes, but one needs to know how to vent sex them. Takes some training on what to look for. THis is for newly hatched chicks.

By 4-6 weeks it should be apparent as the boys combs will become red and they start growing waddles. Girls hold off growing their combs and wattles until a few weeks before they start to lay probably about 16 weeks....

Thanks so much for the replies!

Unfortunately, the feed store didn't have any Australorps in today.

When I called they told me they were coming in today, but are actually coming in next Tuesday. However, I did end up buying a couple Buff Orpingtons. Next Tuesday I will be getting a couple of Australorps as well. I had been trying to decide whether to buy all Australorps or a mix of Australorps and Buff Orpingtons and decided to get a mix.
I'll get some pics of the little cuties posted tonight.

Will's photo of the 2 children demonstrates the only drawback I "see" with Australorps.

Wouldn't you say that those are rather oddly-shaped shadows cast by the kids on the lawn??
Australorps seem to be willing to stay out later in the evening than the other breeds. Maybe their black eyes gather light better

At anytime, they can absolutely vanish when out of the sunlight
