I just hatched 4 eggs from my Cinnamon Queens and Buff Orpington hens. 3 buff and 1 Black chick. I have two roosters a Buff Orpington and Black Copper Maran. I thought the Hen determines the color of the offspring? I’m only assuming this little black chick is from my BCM rooster? I don know enough about how the colors work yet in chickens. Is there a link to learn more about dominant genes?

There's a thing that the genes do with some being dominant and some being recessive, both from hen and roo. I have no idea how it works.

Chicks inherit color genes from both parents, so the hen and the rooster determine the color of the chick. The black chick is from the Marans rooster, while the yellow ones are from the Buff Orpington roo.

I was given this link to study on for genetics. Most of what I've read has been a good read!

This one is a little more complicated and goes over my head a little bit, but I'm wanting to learn it.

Hen color definitely doesn't decide the baby's color. If that were the case, most of my birds would be white or white & bronze. The father's genes are just as important for deciding chick color.

Cinnamon Queens are made by mixing a Rhode Island Red male over a Rhode Island White female. Their offspring are immediately able to be sexed at birth, but the second generation, ie what you're hatching, can really be any mix of colors under the sun when they hatch and are no longer sexable at hatch.

This a Buff Orpington Rooster over a RIR hen

anyway sorry about the long comment!!

I have a chick that looks 100% like it's Daddy when he was a chick and not a bit of it's mother came out in it.

I've found that most of my chicks that hatch with this coloration (blond chipmunk) are usually males. Their mom is a black sex-link (Rhode Island Red roo x Barred Rock hen) and he's also lost the ability to be sexed at birth due to being second gen - I'm interested to see how the colors change though as it ages! that's a neat mix.

My little one is a bit older now. Still looks like it's daddy. Hard to sex it. Has both male and female traits. I am leaning towards male but we will see. Lol it has a little sibling now. She is from same male and my female EE.
