Correct, sprouting is an easy test to know if it's raw or has been cooked and dried.I'd assume cooked beans won't sprout but I'm not sure
I used to buy a product called Crazy Corn for a small parrot that contained raw beans BUT it was a mix that the label specifically instructed you to *cook as directed before serving*. I would boil a batch up and freeze the cooked food in ice cube trays.Post a picture of the black beans. Are sure the beans are not dark pears? I had pigeons years ago and never experienced feed containing beans.

And they effectively avoid the plants/seeds who are toxic for them.My birds seem to be pretty good at identifying what's not good since they free range and bad plants aren't ever eaten and I see a lot of these black bean looking seeds in their feeder

That's awesome! I think I might try soaking mine so they get softer since half my birds have no interest in themI gave them cooked split green peas last week. This was new for them. They only ate a tiny bit and left the rest on the ground.
They ate the rest the next day. I gave them more a few days later. No hesitation.
