I'm not into showing birds either, but have learned a few things since I started my own chicken obsession and I think your splash pullet is a beauty!! Nicely feathered feet and beautiful coloring. I've found that the splash don't lay a super dark egg, but do lay a lovely brown. Good luck with her.

Thank you! I have mostly seen blue splash varieties but this girl is definitely black.

I just thought I'd share a couple pictures from my BBS pen. I am currently looking to replace the black cockerel with a better specimen, if any of you have chicks or hatching eggs to sell, I'd be interested.

I'm trying to figure out the genetics of my flock, which I got as blue/splash marans. Some of my birds seem to be nice, solid colors, like this:

Others that I've gotten as eggs or chicks from the same source are not quite solid. Like the cockerel in front here (which I no longer have):

Or another blue cockerel, in this picture:

Or this hen on the right:

So they don't look like copper marans, but some of them are not 100% solid. Does anybody have an idea of what's going on in the genetics of these birds? What do the white feathers on some of the blue ones mean?

I will have to replace some of what I have, at some point. My solid blue hen (4th picture), in particular, has an ongoing bumblefoot issue and honestly I think her days are numbered. I need to figure out what's going on and make a plan to improve my stock while I still have that hen around. Thanks!

First off if all of these came from one source I would not buy anymore of them from that source. They appear to be pen bred Marans with several colors involved. I see you have Silver Blues and the one male does not look to be a Marans. The Silver Blue male you got rid of was probably the best of all of them.
