Black, Blue and Splash (BBS) Marans discussion thread

I have a question: Do Splash come from copper Black & Blue Marans or do splash only come from non copper Black & Blue Marans? I've heard both.
I have a splash Marans, she has no copper on her but from the same breeder I got copper black and blues when I asked for non copper black and blue Marans.

Thanks for any help.

They can come from both. Don

OK, here's another question.
My wheaten Marans started laying at 5 months old, my black Marans started laying at 8 months old. I have a blue Marans who layed 3 eggs so far this year, starting about a month ago, then she stopped, she is . She is not in a molt, but she's not laying any more eggs, also the 1st one was very dark, the second one was medium and the 3rd was light, they were medium sized eggs. She's a very big girl.
Any clues why she isn't laying any more?
I don't have any roosters in either, BBS so she is with an Ameraucana Rooster and 3 Ameraucana girls who she gets along with great.
I just wanted to be sure to know when she was laying.
Thanks, and thanks Don for helping me out with the other question.

Cathy

I was lucky enough to get 3 Marans pullets this year - 2 blue and one black. I'm pretty happy with them! Although they could use more feathering on their feet. I'm not a breeder though - so its all good! The others I have are BCMs, so I'm looking forward to comparing how these girls do in the lay department. Does anyone find that they are different in the Broody factor? My BCMs drive me crazy with Broodiness! lol!

Here are the girls!

I haven't come up with names for the blues yet - here's #1

I have a question. Do BCM cockerels develop faster that Blues? My first hatch of BCM, I ended up with 2 cockerels and very quick comb and wattle development. My second hatch of Blues/black, are six days shy of a month old and in comparison to my BCM at the same age has very little comb and wattle development. I tried wing sexing, I thought I had 1 cockerel and 1 hen.
What do you all think?

First Pic of my Blue/black Marans they are 6 days shy of a month old. The black one has a little more comb than the blue, but not much to speak of. Since hatch, the blue was twice the size of the black.

Here are the pics of my BCM at 1 month, 6 day older than the ones above.
I think it has more to do with the individual line of birds rather than variety. I have had little pure blue and black baby roos show combs and wattles as early as the bcms and bl coppers.

Mine are all broody crazy at times. The pure blues and blacks are just as bad as the bcms and bl coppers when the mood hits them lol.

Good to know - my bcms seem to spend more time being broody than not! lol!

I have a 3 month old Blue Copper Marans cockerel that needs a home. Friendly, from a breeder in TN with a very good reputation, I have been told. In New England. Any takers? Trying to avoid any unfortunate ends.

If I breed my black copper maran rooster to my black copper hen. Will I get only black chicks

Yep, here's the Blue Black Splash (BBS) formula in case you've never seen it :)

black x blue = 50% black 50%blue
blue x blue = 50% blue 25% black 25% splash
black x splash = 100% blue
blue x splash = 50% blue 50% splash
splash x splash = 100% splash
black x black = 100% black
