Black, Blue and Splash (BBS) Marans discussion thread

Pics
I got them from a lady in Livingston tx
She raises all forms of blk & blue. Coppers too
She mixed eggs on me though so I got some of everything

I have found another in Marble tx, I'm going to get eggs from. She has been working on her blacks for years

Then Big Shawn in canton oh I'll be getting some from him this year when I'm there in August. I only have two blk pullets, two blue pullets. No Roos
He is here as bigshawn. Sells eggs too.
I'm looking for one more separate breeding for more diversity.

The golden lace cuckoos are from Georgia. There is another in New Jersey. They are cuckoos with gold on neck saddle and tail. I'll get some pics today and post them. I have one pair.
Will hatch everything I get.

:p

Hello, I just hatched these 2 blue/black marans 9 days ago. I tried wing sexing for the first time with them. I think its obvious that the blue is a cockerel, and the little black I think is a pullet. This is my second time hatching a small batch of marans. First hatch I ended up with 2 roos. Hoping I have a pullet this time around.

I recently hatched out 7 olive egger babies. They were blue marans roo over olive egger hen. I feather sexed them before 5 days old. Out of 7 I showed 4 pullets and 3 roos. They are 3 weeks old today. I banded them to see if I end up correct. Don't know yet, but I can tell you that the banded pullet chicks got their tail feathers first, then the roos. So far this is matching up to my feather sexing. So did you show that the black one was the girl...according to 2 uneven rows on wing tip? Also I see that the bigger blue one already has tail feathers and I don't see them on the black. Maybe the blue one is a pullet?? I don't think you can tell roo by size at day 9. I hope you get your pullet!!

I was going by wing sexing. The Blue one only had one row of feathers on days1-5 and I thought the black one had 2 uneven rows. This was my first time wing sexing, hope I did it correctly. By the way, I just ordered some olive eggers to hatch. Very excited.

Here is my huge blue marans roo, Big Randy. Now that they are out and about free ranging, I snapped a picture of him with his hens. He is only 10 mos old, but is SOOO huge. I've made some "chicken aprons" for the hens, but working on adjustments. One girl has on her apron. The rest of the girls are losing all their saddle feathers because of his not so gentle practices. I'm hoping to finish the aprons soon. Anyway, I'd appreciate any critique on him.

WOW, he is BIG. I just hatched 2 blue marans so I can't critique since I am not familiar, but he looks like he is very proud! With good reason, I think he is beautiful!

Wow, he is such a pretty boy!! As for critique, you might want to check out this site about marans body type:
http://www.maransofamericaclub.com/marans-breed-type.html

I am definitely no expert on the marans standard, so take what I say with a grain of salt. But going by that article, I think your boy has very nice coloration, but a very high tail angle and maybe longer legs than the standard. As I understand it, those are very common problems with marans. My roo has a bit of the high tail angle thing too:

Either way, I think your roo is gorgeous!
