I bought a couple mystery birds from valley hatchery earlier this year. I think this is a black breasted red jungle fowl which the hatchery does offer. I’m need to enter birds into the computer so I can show them in July and I wanted to make sure that the breed is accurate. Is there anybody who can confirm that this is a jungle fowl bird?

(He doesn’t like to stand still so I had to hold him leading to the blurry photos)

I can't see the comb. Is it a single comb?

Just going by the color, I think he looks more like the Gold Phoenix:

But if he actually is Black Breasted Red, assuming he is not a bantam, he could be the Junglefowl, but I think there is also a chacne of Phoenix or Brown Leghorn or Old English Game:

Wheaten males are colored about the same as Black Breasted Red ones, so that might also be a possibility:

And Easter Eggers can have any appearance, so that may also be a possibility. If he does not have a single comb, Easter Egger becomes much more likely.

I don't know of any way to be positive at this age. Phoenix would become obvious when the tail gets long, but not earlier than that. Earlobe color may not be obvious at this age. You could have a good look at foot color, which isn't really showing in the photos, and compare with various different breeds to see if that makes it clear.

I don't know what to make of that speckled chest.
I would expect a solid black chest on any of the ones I was thinking about (including the Red Jungle Fowl.) There is always the chance he could be an Easter Egger or Olive Egger, since there is no standard appearance for them, but I feel like he ought to fit some specific breed.

@JacinLarkwell @Amer would either of you recognize what kind of cockerel this is? The speckled chest is throwing me off. It came from Valley Hatchery, but I don't see any good matches among the breeds listed there.

It looks like my Phoenix males do before they finish growing their black feathers

We live amongst red jungle fowl on Kaua'i and there are many that look like your baby. The speckles here result from interbreeding with barred hens that escaped en masse during two hurricanes (Iwa and Iniki) that destroyed every coop on the island. They make for very friendly alarm clocks and keep the centipede population in tow.
