Black/brown spots on rooster waddle and comb

Hi All,

My rooster has been developing black and brown spots (almost scab-like look to them) on his waddle and comb. I thought maybe it was frost bite but he has been getting these even since it was warm out. It keeps getting progressively worse. Is it a fungus?

I don't know what to do for it without searching for a vet that will look at him.

Anyone know if a vet in central new jersey that would look at a chicken?

Welcome to BYC. It does look like frostbite to me. Sometimes the roosters will drink water getting the wattles into it, and then if it is freezing temps such as nighttime or early AM, they will get frostbitten. He could have gotten some on his comb. Fugal infection, such as favus usually looks more whitish in the pictures I have seen. Peck marks from another rooster or chicken usually are very black from blood. Does he sleep on a wooden roost at night? Frostbite will usually heal on it's own, sometimes with the discolored tissue dropping off. You can apply Vetericyn, iodine, or plain Neosporin to it if he will permit it.
