A 2yr Buff Orp started not coming down off her perch each morning unless we helped her, and we can't find anything wrong with her except these black callouses on the bottoms of her foot pads. I don't see swelling or redness. She used to have a habit of sleeping on the roof of a soiled nesting box until we figured out how to install a perch above it just right.
Is this a problem?
Thanks....

buff orps are big some times they can get sore from jumping down and then don't want to for awhile. I have BIG EE/Orp who insists on sleeping on the highest roost but will wait for a lift down every morning. sheis a terrible flyer and often crashes when she tries it herself.

Thanks for the ideas and the link to bumblefoot. Now I'll have to look at the other hens' feet to see how big their pads are to know what swelling and normal look like. I'm going to redo some roosts, too, but it might be hard for them to adjust, as they each have their "spot." ha

Suggestion: If you are going to redo roosts, make them the flat or side side of a 2x4. Much more comfortable for them.

Thanks. I was wondering about that. I was looking at pics of coops last night for ideas and saw some boards like that. Ours are all fat branches we put in there for them. I thought they would like the rounded ones. Oh well.

Agreed! It allows them to spread the pressure out over more foot area, thus less pressure-points.
