My son has a 5 month cochin who began laying a week ago. She had a soft-shelled egg on Friday and we began working on increasing her calcium and observing her for possible stress. Yesterday (Tues.) I noticed that there was a great deal of her feathers on the floor of the coop. Her companion a BA has become top hen of the pair and figured there may have been issues leading to the change of rank. Then this morning I noticed that his cochin refused to leave the coop, more feathers, and now I noticed the tops of 2 toes on each foot is bright red. Have read that in some breeds this is normal for age and development but is this normal for a black cochin? The toes are not swollen just bright red on top (hard to see though with all of the feathering). Thank you for everyone's time and assistance.
