From what little research I did on the feathered legs, there is both. I noticed Cackle sells French Cuckoo.
So because she has feathered feet, she was most likely imported from another country? I would be a bit surprised to hear that because I just got her from a farm store, so nothing special there... Then again, I know nothing about breeding and selling chicks, so that could be normal.
All Marans were originated from the town Marans, France. This is why it was stated earlier it's always spelled Marans, singular or plural.
It is pronounced Mah-ran, spelled Marans. Singular and plural.
Here's my limited knowledge....
From my understanding, the English took some back to England, bred them to their liking, clean legged and created their own English Standard. Whereas, the US and all others breed for French (feathered legs), somehow the Cuckoos here in the states are both clean and feathered options.
@BlueTheBrahma is in the UK and much more knowledgeable on the Cuckoos as he breeds those varieties as well as other Marans and I bet could shed more insight than I have.
I would favor having the French Cuckoo if I had them as being here in the US we follow the French Standard for feathered shanks. Whereas, BluetheBrahma breeds mostly clean for his Standard.
So to answer your question... All Marans were imported to the US at some point, and yours is French.
