This week I am getting six chicks mailed to me from mypetchicken, but a slight mishap occurred. One of my chicks was going to be a Mille Fleur, but today they called me and said that they ran out of Mille Fleur hens. Then they told me that instead of a Mille Fleur, they could give me a Black Copper Marans. On addition to that, they told me that this particular BCMs mom was a very high show quality bird, and her chicks probably will be, too. I agreed to getting the BCM, but now I have to decide what to do with her if she turns out to be like her mommy. Should I breed her, show her, or just do nothing. I think it would be a waste to keep her cooped up (chicken pun!) at home. Also, if I were to breed her in the future, where would I get the BCM rooster around Boise, ID? Please help!!!

If it were me, I'd just enjoy her being one of the crew.

From what I've seen, pretty much everyone says that about their BCMs... I would just enjoy her nice dark brown eggs and not worry about it unless you want to get into showing and breeding. In which case wait until she's older then post a pic in the BCM thread and ask then.

Sounds like they should have given your money back on the chick they didn't send.
It may be nice for them to say she's a show quality hen, but I wouldn't get my hopes up too much yet.

Did they elaborate on the quality of the rooster or roosters that have been breeding with her within the three
or four weeks of laying these eggs?

We a very picky about our flocks and our fbc marans and only breed the best traits to the best traits and that doesn't mean that all
the chicks are going to be winners.

Enjoy your chick and hopefully it will be a hen.

I would enjoy those great dark brown eggs. I got a BCM roo chick 3 weeks ago from a hatchery that was out of pullets for the year. Found a local that was to sell me 6 BCM pullets, but the guy never called back when they were hatched, so now I have this cute little roo that can't lay eggs. We did get 2 mille fleurs, but don't know their sex yet.

Thanks for your input! I think I'll just keep her as part of the crew for now and see what happens next!
