Black Copper Marans discussion thread

It would not surprise me if he was a cross. He has a good bit of red on his breast too.... I think I saw that. I am on my phone so I can look closer. In that pic where We could see the wing color.....all looke really muddy not clearly marked. His tail look like another breed not a marans.

Can you talk a little more about purple sheen? The BCMs I hatched out have a green sheen but also purple. Wondering what it means. I'm going to breed them for egg layers because it's what I have at the moment, but I won't breed them to any good stock I acquire in the future.

I have asked the same thing about purple and really the only answer I get from long time breeders is DONT use them. I have been told it is a mahogany gene thing.....IDK beyond that. Sorry didnt help much.

LOL..oh well. I've got more than one reason not to use them, brachydactyly, possible wheaten split, etc. But they are what I have. Sigh.

:rantmy BCM are six months when will they start to lay?

Ours start around six months old, however, if yours were hatched to mature during deep winter, they can even wait until spring depending on the daylight hours in the days.

Is she starting top peck at her free feed oyster shell and getting interested in her nests?

Gently check the pelvic bone spacing at the vent area, If you can fit two fingers or more between the bones, she will either start laying very soon... is already laying and hiding her nests... or, someone may be eating broken eggs. If her bone spacing is smaller than that, it may possible to be awhile longer. Hope it's soon!

I got burned on Craigslist.
I post on Craigslist before a TSC parkinglot Chicken Swap. I dont burn anyone. It is not in my nature. I plan to go back to that TSC parkinglot Chicken Swap month after month, year after year. I go to two TSC Flock Swaps a month during the warm months. That is 6-8 Flock Swaps. I want people to come back to me for more and bring their friends too.

I felt terrible when I realized I had been burned by a very nice sounding young woman. I did not take the time to check out the sex of the older and younger starter chicks. I took her word for it as he was experienced with her breeds and I was just getting started with that breed AND by the time we got there she was there early and raring to go. She and her hubby were in a hurry to get on with their trip. I took her word for it and they looked healthy when I glanced at them as we transferred them from her cages to ours and one got away from her and we caught it and it really seemed calmly chaotic.

After I got them home a week or two later I said you know what? Half look like they might turn out to be roos. Oh yes, when on the phone she kept saying she was throwing in a special roo and I kept saying I dont need it, no thank you. She pulled that roo out last as she shoved it into a cage and said I am giving you this one for free.

Stunned I said no thank you and she said we have no where to put it, She said I told you we were On our way up the mountain for a short vacation. Oh my! I gave him away. He was a sweet roo, very calm but I did not need him nor want him.

When half of the pullets turned out to be males and not just the older pullets, I tried to send her a messge or two. Since no response. I dropped it. It will not happen again. The only live chickens I get from anyone that lists anywheres will be from a Flock swap of a repeat seller, some one I have seen around the Flock Swaps over and over again. OR a hatchery. How do people sleep at night? I am too old for that type of nonsense.
