Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Here is one of my supposed craigslist BCM roo, He has a blue or something bleeding through his back.

I don't think he is a true BCM. Anyone else??
he's built pretty good overall... leg feather ok ...... for sure not black copper(i came back to edit this (i could be wrong about him not being BC / i am color blind)and he may be the mahogany ) . What color is he blue , red or brown(or mixture of the 3 ?) . Some one ill let you know the rest of the story , good luck .

I don't see what you are referring to on his back. I see maybe some purple sheen? As well as green sheen. He looks like a Black Copper Marans to me, just over melanized (too dark). His hackle color is more mahogany than copper. That color will pop out in the Black Copper breedings as well as a lighter (straw) color. Do you know how old he is?

Well first off, he is a Wheaten Marans, not a Black Copper. And second, he has a serious squirrel tail which is a DQ.
I don't know what a Wheaton Marans looks like but I thought the copper color (and black of course) is what made them a BCM. And the tail position is from him walking up a hill. Standing still it doesn't look like that but I couldn't get him to stand still for a picture lol

Wheaton Marans' are a completely different color phase and while the rooster do have black and some copper, the colors are different in the roosters and the hen coloration is extremely different.
This is a pair of Wheatons

I see that now. I guess when I hear "Wheaton" I think of lighter colors. I'm still learning about certain breeds. I really like the Marans dark eggs. My roo was actually suppose to be a RIR when I got a bunch of them as 4 wk old chicks (and they were suppose to be pullets lol) but when I realized he was growing feathers on his legs I knew he wasn't! He is probably a mix. I just thought (other than his squirrel tail) that he was a big beautiful rooster and from some of the research I have done came to the conclusion (bc of his color and leg feathers) that he was a (at least part) Marans. Thank you for your help and pics.

this is another pic of him (and his ladies :) now I can examine both pics together and see the differences)

As @Lucky KY Chicks posted, the Wheaten (with an "e", not "o") hens looks entirely different from Black Copper, but the males are similar. The way to tell them apart is by the color of the wing triangle, that small part of the wing that is partially covered by the saddle feathers. The wing triangle is brown red in Wheaten, black in Black Copper. Of course if he is a mix, all beats are off. It is said that confusion with Wheaten is why some lines of Black Copper are so messed up today, people mistakenly using a Wheaten male over their Black Copper hens.
