Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Wow! It's just a teeny, tiny pullet egg! Yolk and all!!!

I had another talk with the people I bought the pair of BCM's from that I think we all agree don't really look like your typical BCM's.

They say the one on the left is actually an olive egger even though she doesn't have a pea comb. The one on the right they still say is a BCM even though there is no copper. She did have a couple of copper feathers on the back of her neck when she was younger but they seem to have gone and she is now totally black. The one on the left actually has more leg feathering than the one on the right.

They said "Poultry there's no paper with the history of the parents. Each breeder has a personal goal. These birds we sell are mainly for pets, Calm, Quiet and Gentle also for sure a Dark Brown Egg. Now for darker Brown or olive requires less laying to make the die darker. We also want good healthy birds so they may not be the darkest. Our goal is healthy and good pets."

Still waiting to see what their eggs will be. The all black one I think is getting close. Her wattles and comb have gotten dark red. They are both 18 weeks old now.

Bummer Gapey. Your birds are beautiful, but you didn't get what you paid for. The barn where you bought them charges way too much for their "purebred" birds to have them end up being something else. You'd think they would be more concerned about their reputation.

On the same note, I bought a boxful of pullets last spring from a large chain store in Washington. I got 25% cockerels, and the Welsummers I paid quite a bit for are not welsummers. They didn't have Marans, so I got the Welsummers because I wanted dark eggs. I'm getting tinted eggs. Oh well! I'll only get my birds from local breeders now and not the commercial outlets. I still adore all my birds though. :)

Who knows where the barn gets their chicks from. I've never had chicks shipped and don't plan on doing that. I prefer getting them local too. There are some breeds I want though that I may not be able to find locally. I've given them my 2 cents on this breed so maybe if enough people bring it to their attention they will do something about it like putting a disclaimer about them not being true BCM's on their advertising. I'm not even sure the black one would pass as a black marans. Her tail doesn't really sit at a 45 degree angle.

Got a pair of BCM'S in my order of buffs awhile back. They were short on the buffs. Well just so happened one is a pullet and the other a cockerel. But the problem is the hen has good coloring were the cockerel is all black. Maybe a few copper hackel feathers. My question is can I either breed the copper into a cockerel or can I breed the copper out altogether and have black marans?

I fry those eggs up for my 3 year old. She eats two or three of the Jumbo sized Marans eggs in a sitting so it isn't quite her correct portion, but I think I get more enjoyment out of serving them to her than I would eating them myself.

My vote would be to not try to work with this pair. If the hens is worth breeding you could source a better cockerel.
