My experience is that you can tell VERY early on with BCMs. If it looks like a cockerel compared with the others by week 2 its pretty likely that opinion will not change as they grow. I have never been surprised by one at this age. The key is to have several BCMs to compare against each other

Ah, seeing your two side by side, mine certainly does not inspire a lot of confidence in the pullet department, does it? Drat. Thanks for the help everyone! Time to start looking for a new home!

Does this not matter at all one way or the other?

Is it an indication of anything?

Noticed the same...not just pink vs. red, but black vs. pink sometimes...I have observed with many of my breeds that young pullets will have a darker tone in that area until they are fully mature and point-of-lay. As you know, rooster combs will redden early on. For me, the dark combs (not just pale, but dark) make sexing easier early-on especially with pea-combed breeds.

She says its a hen but it's hard to tell and I have three from the same hatch and their cones are a lot smaller.

Both are cockerels. Both have way too much color on their breast and I would not use them for breeder.

Is this darker egg a maran egg?i think I need to pen my two up sperate from the rest to see if these are theirs? They are seven months old now.

I am saving my copper maran eggs for the incubator.

Today it suddenly crossed my mind that maybe I should be hatching the copper maran x ameraucana eggs.

Anyone ever done that? What color eggs would the offspring produce? Would it be worthwhile to do this?
