Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I have decided to just keep my thoughts to myself and let The Marans forums run as best they can. I have spent several years on BYC trying to help where I can, but there has always been someone ready to take a run at me for one reason or other.  Don

I still think it is my right to not pass on info about another Marans person even if I believe they are selling faulty eggs.

You were justified in not publishing names to the public.  Who knows all the circumstances?  PMing seems the way to go if someone wanted the info.   Kern

Absolutely right Kern. PM's can help with information gathering and that is why we are here. To collect what knowledge we can.

I appreciate your knowledge Don and wait to see what you will freely give. Due to those who don't do well with a blunt comment I know you have learned to keep much of your findings to yourself. I'm sure no one meant to badge you but to put forth another side to the argument of sharing information. However it is not the requester on whom the proverbial stuff hitting the fan will land. As much as we would all LOVE to hear, publishing names on a public board is always unwise. The best to you Snowbird and thank you for all you have shared.

We try to share our experiences both the + and - along our BCM journeys, so others (and newbies) can be aware... so, as hopefully not to make the same errors that we did.

My opinion is that information should not be posted on a public forum and is best left to private messaging. That said, there is a group on FB Good Egg Bad Egg where people post reviews of egg/chick sellers and buyers.

How can anyone expect to get high quality from buying on ebay? Are there that many top poultry breeders selling their eggs on ebay?

Can they prove their quality from show wins? LOTS of show wins?

I would never buy a puppy from a pet store or back yard breeder so the thought of buying eggs on ebay is
not in my mind set.

Not that I buy a ton of eggs. When I do I get them from BYC! Just because the eggs I have recieved are well packed to handle shipment well! I have purchased eggs from ebay with not so good packing. Not to say that there isn't good people on there that pack well! Just that there are more people on her with more experience. I don't need scrambled eggs. I want hatching eggs.

A question:

I can pick a rooster that is much too dark (VERY little copper), but has a decent tail angle and decent to good body/conformation, has perfect leg color and has EXCELLENT egg color genetics,

or

I can pick a rooster that is much better conformation and SOP, but has poor egg genetics

Snaffle, Just to remind you the Eggs were bought as an experiment to see what would show up with the BC Marans from bought Eggs. Most of the Top Marans breeders at one time have sold eggs on ebay. Since you seem to think you know a lot about Marans chickens in general where and who would you buy from ? You can PM if you like. I have bred a lot of BC Marans in the past eight years. I have probably hatched and grown out more than anyone else.I believe I know what I am doing. Don

If you are breeding for the SOP then go with the Male with good type. If you are into Egg color go with the Dark Male. Myself I would go with the SOP type Male. Don

Typed words on a screen are a pale shadow of a face to face conversation. We interpret these electronic words through our own filters and experiences. More often than not, our translation is not what was intended by the writer. To those of us to whom words and meaning matter, we ask honest questions in our efforts to come as close to understanding the original writer's true meaning. In the process we can be judged or misinterpreted ourselves, even belittled or wrongly accused. Those feeling the need to constantly defend themselves or convince others that they are the experts are often the quickest to judge. Many are here to learn and ask questions toward that end.

Be Kind.
