Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Snaffle, Just to remind you the Eggs were bought as an experiment to see what would show up with the BC Marans from bought Eggs. Most of the Top Marans breeders at one time have sold eggs on ebay. Since you seem to think you know a lot about Marans chickens in general where and who would you buy from ? You can PM if you like. I have bred a lot of BC Marans in the past eight years. I have probably hatched and grown out more than anyone else.I believe I know what I am doing. Don
I do not seem to think I know a lot about marans chickens in general. Not sure where you got that impression lol

I have six Morans around 14 weeks old . None of them go on the roost. Is this some how common to the breed? My 13 week leghorns roost all the time. Any input is appreciated.

Marans are not the fliers that Leghorns are.

My Marans don't like flying up more than about 2 feet. Because they get so big and tend to be a bit clumsy (compared to a Leghorn), super high perches with Marans might result in injuries.

I do have high perches, but I have set up my space so that the Marans can get up high by small stages.... .... mine haven't yet damaged anything..

point being.... give the Marans more time, they can and will fly up to perch, but not as well as Leghorns.

How high is too high [for safety] for a Marans? My perches are about 3-4' off the floor. I have a higher one on one side of my coop and a lower one on the other side. My current 2 BCM hens aren't anything spectacular but I have some nice prospects growing out and I don't want to risk hurting them down the road with too high perches.

deep fluffy bedding will help with reducing the risk of injuries.

If the perches are set up so that the Marans can go from the shortest perch to the mid one, to the highest one... they will probably be OK.

Again, deep soft bedding will help lots.

so pretty these hens love the colors..

I hatched out my first BCM babies the other day! My hens are from little peddler line and the rooster was free. I only incubated the darkest eggs, I wanted to see what I'd come up with! I know they're nothing special but I am very happy with them!!
