Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Thank you Don for the help! Here is another pic of a different roo.He is worse! He is her second roo! The chicks have more feathering then the roo! The wheaton will always show up in future? Well darn! I have three pullet and no roo! Back on the waiting list! Going on like three years now! I just want a roo that isn't a freak and kinda follows close to the standard.Dark eggs would be nice!
I am going to have 3 if not 4 roosters that I will be looking to rehome otherwise they will be in my freezer. They are 4 1/2 weeks right now

Would any of you BCMarans fanciers care to share any input on a couple of my lil friends? I got 9 chicks from a local-ish guy on craigslist in April. I don't think he was a very seasoned breeder, but I bought a group of chicks anyway. Some of them (not specified) are supposed to be BCM, though I think they are all mixed and I'm not quite sure which breed is which. In reading through some of this thread I learned about the melanising and a light bulb clicked in my head because my pullet Bev has all black eyes, very cute. She almost looks rumpless. She has no feathers on her feet.

Do you think she has at least some BCM in her? Any guesses as to what breed otherwise?

I am guessing he has some BCM in him. He has a sad excuse of leg feathers (one small feather on each leg), haha. But I also learned in this thread that markings and etc take time and patience in BCM roos. Tyrian was born in April. Thoughts?

Just trying to figure out what breeds/mixes I might have ended up with, out of curiosity. Thanks!:)

@SamSWIA

They could both be pure Marans, and just not the best examples of Marans.

Not all BCM have the right leg feathering. My breeders actually hatch out chicks in a full range of leg feathering from none to a crazy large amount. Clearly I haven't spent time trying to stabilize the amount of leg feathering... I have been focussed on other aspects.

I have several 6 week old BCM chicks. Some are clearly cockerels but there seem to be to many pullets so I suspect some are just maturing slowly. Any ideas what age I can be confident about gender with this breed?

Also, anyone in the northeast looking for any sweet BCM roosters that are handled daily and are still spoiled enough to sleep in the house at night (but are finally out of the bedroom at least)? I am hoping to find them their own flocks. They are from a breeder, not hatchery stock. I am in Rhode Island.

Tyran appears to have side sprigs.

:idunno I am usually fairly confident at about 8 weeks of age... But I don't make any promises until
I see some clear male feathers.
