Black Copper Marans discussion thread

what do you mean about; Do the marans roosters have pretty much the same disposition in all maran breeds?
chicken man

What I meant was, are all Maran roosters similar in temperament regardless of breed (birchen, black copper, cuckoo etc.) ? In other words, are black copper maran roosters meaner than cuckoos? Are birchen more easy-going than cuckoos? Or is plummage the only difference between them?[/quote]

My Golden Cuckoo and Black copper Roosters are well behaved. Non Aggressive to people. Neither overmates the hens and and always come running when a hen squawks. They are very vigilant toward threats as well.

i have had 3 marans roosters. The meaner ones were usually when there was more than one rooster on the 50 acre property. I have 1 now that I am living in a different place with 25 acres. He is nicer but he also lost one of his eyes. So perhaps it also has to do with the number of females and competition nearby

I have probably had (over time) 15 or 20 mature Black or Blue Copper Roosters... (Mostly black). They are all different. Some were more aggressive than others. Most were not what I would consider aggressive to humans.... (Not for long anyway). The dominant roosters aggression toward the subordinate roosters varied. Some were tolerant of their subordinates and others ruthlessly attacked whenever the subs got too close. (This would also be a reason to cull one because the constant strife in the flock was not worth it). But none of them was as aggressive as my first Rhode Island Red Rooster.. He was aggressive. ...

I couldn't say for comparing between the different strains as I have always had the Blacks or the Blues which are really just a grey version of the Blacks.

my cockerel is docile. but I spend a lot of time with him, he is one of my favourite chickens.

I have 11 week old BCM. Is this a cull? What causes this?

Could be, depends on how bad it gets. There are worse traits to deal with, but what starts as that could possibly turn into this:

This is from my first group, and all were way over colored. If you only have one like that, I wouldn't be overly concerned, but 75% of mine were. Add the mossiness to several other terrible flaws, and that's why I scrapped the entire flock

Speaking of that, I've been in contact with Brian Parks, and also Julie Akers in FL. Both have Davis line birds, and both are highly recommended. Brian is in Oregon, but I will be ordering chicks not eggs, so I'm not overly concerned about the shipping. Brian's are a little more expensive, though. I know sidewing got his birds from Julie, and he seems very happy with them. Does anyone else have any experience with her?

Well to look at her she looks all dark black but when you look close you can see it!
