Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Thanks. I knew he was probably off by a long mark, but I knew it would help me learn a bit more by understanding the faults of my own bird. I knew he was lacking on the coloring, his sisters are still completely black. Is it a bad idea to learn as you go? At this point am I too new to purchase eggs from a good breeder and start up a breeding flock? I suppose I would just be contributing to the faults of the breed at this point.

Everyone starts somewhere and their are plenty of people who purchase for pets and only need pet quality. Their is nothing wrong with learning as you go. It takes years to learn everything and no one knows everything no matter how long they have been doing it. Read, ask questions and don't feel cowed or wrong to post pics here. This community is here to help and be supportive. :)

Not only is there a lot to learn about Marans, there is a lot to learn about chickens. No one knows everything. You have a lot of knowledgeable people here that are very helpful. Decide what you want and then go for it. I offered on the International Thread and I will offer again here. When my pullets are laying I would be happy to send you hatching eggs.

I am blow away by the hospitality of these breed threads. I can tell I will be falling in love with all the knowledge on the marans threads.

I don't have a stick for chickens. I raise them with love and I get love in return. they all go to their coops in the evening by themselves. chickens don't like to stay out when it is dark.

Sorry, I think you misunderstood the use of my chicken sticks. I use them as extensions of my arms to create a sort of funnel effect as the chickens walk back to their coop. I don't strike my chickens, but the sticks come in handy when separating roosters or when you just need seven foot long arms to point the way :)
I have ten coops, five of which are identical and multiple roosters so everyone can't free range at the same time. Chickens are not smart creatures and they get confused by the identical houses. The often need to be herded to the right one.

Quote: I use very thin bamboo sticks 4 feet long for the exact same reason. A friend of mine laughs at my chicken sticks. Just like a sheep herder with his staff. The bamboo sticks are leftover tomato stakes!

The reason they work so well is the length but also they are so light weight, they are not running in fear like when I tried to use the rake!

Precisely! I couldn't live without my chicken sticks!

Hope all of you have stopped by the new Marans thread, International Black Copper Marans. Lots of good info there.

So my rooster is obvious, but I am I wrong about any of these hens? One is a Cochins cross, I think the one with the white wing tips.
Feel free to critique my roo, too. I think he's pretty special but I suck at assessing conformation in any animal.
