Black Copper Marans discussion thread

you probably didn't read my reply to Shanandgem. I really don't need a stick. my chickens are more spoiled than my dogs.

You don't need a stick because your chickens' living arrangements and environment are different than ours. It doesn't make you better or worse at keeping chickens than we are.
If I didn't mind losing all of them every day to the wolves, coyotes, cougars, bobcats, hawks and eagles that populate my neighborhood I could let my chickens free range all day and put themselves up at night.

I use a stick because sometimes I need to separate some of my more aggressive roosters from my hens, and I don't want to get to close to the roosters.
Or skittish hens away from the other chickens, I had 3 hens and a roo from a abusive home. They would come and attack me or run away when I got close to them so using my stick was easier to guide them places rather then be attacked or have a nervous bird.
There's nothing wrong with having a chicken stick

Or when I'm trying to get my ducks to go to a pond

I believe in the soft touch to raising hens also.  But we were really taken aback by the mean Cuckoo Marans in spite of handling and treats and spoiling.  Sometimes there's just one rotten egg in the bunch and before the behavior becomes contagious to the rest of the flock we re-home.

Not all cuckoo marans are bullies though. We have 2 that get along fine with our bantams. I think preparation is huge and also age. Lots of factors to chickens not getting along. I won't allow mine to hurt others either but sometimes it's fixable..

I thought that's just what they did lol. All our chickens put themselves to bed and then we just lock the doors lol. :)

I don't have predators here so I guess my chickens can afford to be sweet.

How do you know my chickens are not sweet? I asked a question about one moment of questionable behavior from one young hen.
You are making a lot of assumptions and are looking the worse for it.

Where is all this hostility coming from. We all do things in different ways. No one is abusing their chickens. I don't think how the chickens are put to bed says anything about temperament..
