Sweetman, If you ever have any basic type questions you can shoot me a PM. I am fairly versed on the day to day things, It's just marans that I am new with haha. And try not to think too hard about all the downs, usually those darned things come in a group. I lost a 6 week old splash ameraucana chick, a gorgeous english black orpington, and ended up with a case of scaly legs all in the same week

.

I just consider too many roos to be part of hatching/buying unsexed birds/eggs. I finally got rid of all the extra roos of my rando breeds, Before I got rid of them I probably had 16-18 cockerels running around harassing my layer/mixed group during their free range time .

Lol yes we have decided to make a bachelor pen and let them free range during the day. We are to attached to give them away for the stew pot. they will be our guard dogs hahaha

Right!! I'm in love with my boys!! Buy i have a flock of 4....3males....idk what to do! Lol and my kid is so attached! My poor female! Lol i guess she will be the one to choose him! Lol

Hello!! This is Mercury at 7 weeks. Unfortunately she was hatched with brachydactyly (missing toes) and cannot be bred or shown. Although she is the sweetest, quietest, calmest, and easiest chicken I have had! A friend of mine and I decided to go in on some black Copper Maran eggs this spring! But out of 12 Eggs only 5 hatched and out of those 5 one went missing and the other four all have practically as well........ it's been a rough spring! A lot of learning to!

we have a she who looked just like this she at 7 wk,...wait for 2 weeks, HE will start trying his crowing voice. Only chicken to get named actually, he's amazing!!

Roosters always become your favorite before you know they are roos, who can reject their brave and friendly personalities? Some of my cockerels crowed when they were YOUNGER than 7 weeks old... you get them out of the house real soon when that happens lol. They sound like kazoos at first.

So far Mercury (he/she) has been the quietest bird i have owned! I hope it keeps up! Lol its been a boy year for sure!! I said i wanted one....now i have 3! ;-)

My favorite Blue Copper male attacked my black church shoes the other day. He charged at my feet. I have been using my black flip flops when I go in the pens. Where they that much different! Then he was going after my flip flops! I had my husband go in the pen with me. He said I don't think he is attacking you! He is in love with you! lol He does look at me with that look

He always has! I have to go in the pen and pick him up to get anything done or he is after my feet.

I always end up with more boys then girls. I ended up with about 1/3 girls and 2/3 boys this year. I need to thin out the flock.

I thought I broke my roo's leg yesterday when I moved their tractor. Somehow his leg got pinned under the back edge when I started to drag it. What an awful feeling. He is limping a little today but was out in the yard for a solid couple of hours and moved around pretty well under his own steam.
