This is what I want from my new Marans!. They will be hatched from some really dark eggs so I am hopeful. I love the table covered in eggs, what a statement!. I am assuming that the beautiful blue eggs are from Legbars?

Yes, I've had Marans and am aware of darker splotches or speckling on the shell. I think the poster was asking about raised deposits on the shell that could very naturally look like raised dark spots but maybe could be calcium deposits. I never had a calcium deposit problem with my Marans but did have issue with speckled calcium little bumps on our White Leghorn eggs. Since then I've provided several different feeds -- some layer and some non-layer feeds -- to accommodate newer laying pullets as well as those that are older and not laying so much.

I just bought a couple of Marans that are only 2 days old. How long before I know if they're hens or roos?

I was 100% accurate on mine in the first week..... especially if they are slow feathering.

Cockerels - they won't have a tail and the pullets will.

My FBCM roo was very obviously a rooster right out of the gate. He was noticeably larger than the females and had red in his comb almost immediately. He's a few days past 3 weeks old in this pic. Definitely has a tail though. This is Ragnar. He's almost a year old, not aggressive with us in the least, and fertilizing eggs as he should!
