Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Okay, to sum up some of the comments on BCM chickdown - lots of black is good in roosters, results in good color. I assume that means sufficient copper, and good copper balance, and the right shade of copper? Too much white chickdown results in overdark roosters in most cases, meaning not enough saddle color, or the copper itself being too dark?

No comments were made specifically about hens, except that Debbi saw no correlation - just a lot of dark hens in the end.

I try to concentrate on one thing at a time and look really hard at it... If I were to look at the hens I might see that the hen that was posted had shafting.. One might see if the down is the proper color.. Since I didn't concentrate on hens... THis may be another avenue for ppl to travel during this healthy "look" and the birds as they mature as to what we can gleen as a collaberative.

At this time it might be useful to post a side by side of our current hatch study with a juvenile photo beside it's hatchling pictures... We took several views of each chick and now we have something to go on if we do the same views with the same birds...

Math.. you in???

Oh good, it's not just me. Looks like the Jeane C1 line has some psittacine blood in there, huh?

Quick question... I have an almost 5 week old BCM who has almost no comb at this point. Definitely a pullet, but I would expect at least SOME comb development. Does this happen sometimes and will it eventually come in? Looks similar to the one giving the stink eye in the post above (behind and to left in this picture):

I think for this breed... the one steadfast rule that never changes can be summed up in two words:

It Depends.

That picture is youngbiddy's. I just quoted the post it was in.

A new question, just for kicks. Has anyone seen a correlation between rooster hackle stripe (or lack of stripe) and the quality of copper in hens thrown? I've read some other forums lately that talk alot about hackle stripe in other breeds. I know some of our BC have them some don't. Anyone see connections between hackle stripe and either good hackle or no hackle color in hens?
