Black Copper Marans discussion thread

HEY VC! Somebody has to pick up Don's slack. .. . I see the thumbprint, but did you see a spring ? ? ?

She is amazingly BLACK. . . . how do you get that black and still have the white feather issue ? ?
( I really was hoping you could take time away from fatherhood to answer this question

)

So . . . .. . .. what do you think -
is she not pure BCM or.. . God Forbid, is there a limited relationship between feather color and shank / eye color ? ? ? ? ?

Um, what are thumbprints and sprig? Type slowly. ha ha ha!

She was sold to me as a pure BCM, but I think she was also older than advertised, and her eggs don't seem that dark compared to other BCM eggs I've seen, so I'm not sure.

Thumbprints are where the comb looks like somebody wrapped it around their thumb. It is the part that folds over ( kinda of wavy) instead of standing straight up. It is a FAULT, whereas a spring would be a DQ.

Marans should have the standard 5 point single comb.

A sprig is where there is a piece growing of comb growing off the side of the main comb. sort of like branches growing off the main tree trunk.

No, I was joking about how Don always catches the sprig or print - I wasn't even commenting about the comb - it just seems like all I ever comment on lately is legs!
In the full pic, the legs look a little yellow. Is that just the photo rendering? Everyone's eye is drawn to something first - I usually see the shanks... I don't know why.

I am of the camp that shanks are not closely related to feathering (nor eyes) that is why I tend to comment when I see them in conflicting configurations, because it reinforces my position.

About the white - are they really white feathers, or just the pin coverings on new ones coming in? It's in such a strange place... and the light shanks on a hen throw me as well... another BCM enigma. Does she lay a dark egg?

Oh by the way, on a pullet - - - I would not worry about minor waving like she is exhibiting. . .. Some of these girls and boys GROW into their combs. . . Upon maturity they could stand straight up. When you are evaluating the WHOLE bird. . . . the comb is only worth 5 pts. Unless your bird has everything else going on really good - - - I would not discard a bird because a fault on the comb. The DQ of a side sprig is another issue . ... but I have BIGGER issues than to get rid of and can not get rid of birds because of faults on combs.

This is just the strategy that I am using. . . . I am trying to better the next generation. I am working on longer backs, wider stances ( on my females) , white feather and hackles ) ( on my males) and tail angles. When I have these things under control - - I'll move on to combs

I have a question for you experts out there.. since I'm new to BCM's and need some advice

I am growing out about 15 BCM's right now of various ages. I've got 3 right now that are 6 weeks old, 2 roos and 1 pullet. One of the roo's has some very slight white to the tips of his feathers which are just below his mini wattles and on the top area of his breast. I'm assuming this is a defect with this variety, but will these grow out? Or is this something permanent? After they are 5-6 months I'll probably decide which I'm keeping for a breeder, but I didn't know if I should find this guy a home now, or if I should hang on to him. Thanks for any input!
