Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Oh poor thing but I am not sure she is blind. I have some dummies that act like that. If you are wondering about her laying just give her a chance you kept her this long what is a few more weeks? I have a one eyed blue hen that lays like a champ. She is also 4 years old.

I don't believe it is the sunlight as much as the natural circadian rhythm of a bird that dictates when they lay. I would be curious enough to feed her to see. But than that is me.

I know she can see some. I felt horrible after I go done with the video she ran strait into the wall

I am going to wait and see if she lays any eggs. Since it looks like it's a genetic thing, if she does lay eggs would it still be best not to use her? Could she pass on this genetic trait? Sorry if this was already answered and I missed it.

I don't think I would use her to breed but she may make an excellent layer. My blind girl is a good layer and I wouldn't sell her even if she isn't a Marans

I use large metal hog pans (big round metal pans) in my layer pen. Pickles can hear the others pecking the food on the metal so she has no problem finding food no matter where I place the pans. I keep thier water in the same spot.

I have her clutch in an A-frame run I built out of 2x2's and chicken wire, that I move to fresh grass at breakfast, lunch, dinner time, and once more right before they go to sleep for the night. They've never been in an enclosed coop, I cover the run with a tarp when it rains. There's quite simply no place for any bugs to hide.

That pic was right after I finished putting it together, it's been moving around the middle of my large, sunny yard ever since.

Congrats on your new layers kathy!! Hey no teasing, we wanna see eggie pics LOL!

If my chickens see a roach they will kill each other trying to get to it first haha especially my key west rescue hens. You can tell they were total scavengers at one time in thier lives. I opened the door of thier coop one morning and one of those big palmetto bugs/roaches fell off the roof and down into the run and they about trampled me ripping the thing apart and squawking. God Bless Key West hens lol. I hate those bugs.
