Hi!
If you are asking about the bird in the first photo....it is a roo. Look toward the back end of the bird close to the tail and you can see the pointy saddle feathers coming in.

I'm quite confident that's a cockerel. See how his comb attaches at the front...how he sort of looks "Roman nosed" from the side? That...in combination with his thick legs, screams BOY! (at least to me.)

Hi AmiableHen.

I subscribe to this thread and have been following along for quite some time. I've learned a great deal and I hope to have some skin in the game soon.

If you would indulge me, I've been dying to post something useful.

I've made a couple of incubators and I'm on my second hatch with some lovely BCM eggs I acquired from an awesome breeder here on BYC. I've written a how to on my BYC page, but I need to update it to include some modifications I've made in the past few weeks. These bators are not intended for large quantity of eggs, but for more moderate, smaller hatches. I don't have acres of space, otherwise I'd be making them cabinet size.

I've made mine mostly out of scrap material I had laying around. The biggest expenses being a good thermometer, hygrometer, GQF thermostat and an egg turner. I didn't want to take chances on those items when incubating high-quality expensive eggs.

I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Here's a current pic of my incubators. The one on the left is my hatcher.

Ahem....we prefer "gently steaming" to cooking...

I really enjoyed making them and tinkering to perfection.

"Gently steaming" — duly noted for future reference.

Cute chicks
If they have the same parents I would guess the left to be female and right to be male but a chicken sexer would squeeze them and compare vents.
My avatar is a homemade (dishwasher) incubator.
