Black Copper Marans discussion thread

You can come by tomorrow. I'm super busy doing Fondant work for weddings right now And the rest! In fact I need to know when DDs wedding is being rescheduled for and what size their top tier is so I can make the topper appropriately. Should be pretty neat.

The babies are doing really well. They're now in the grow out pen I made in the last quarter of the coop. Super funny! They want to join the big boys so badly! Some of the girls are looking like they may be serious

oh my goodness I am on page 14 and my eyes are crossing. There is so much info that I know I am not retaining at all. This is so fascinating!!! I wish I understood half of it. I suppose after a few years of trying to raise BCM I might catch a little more... sigh.... darn learning curve!
Genetics fascinates me

k going back...

Well I have tried hatching shipped eggs with terrible success rate to build a BCM breeding flock. Out of the 3 that I successfully hatched I got 2 for sure cockerels. I plan on keeping them both and then deciding which to keep after they get older, both feathered legs, and look pretty to me... LOL Here is a pic of one of the boys and a couple of a Blue and blue/splash and a Whetean that I hatched. The dark blue looks rooish to me also. The BCM's are 7 weeks, the Blues are 5-6 weeks and the Wheaten is only 3 weeks.

I have 2 cuckoo Marans and a wheaten cockerel in the big coop already... My plan is to try my hand at breeding BCM and Wheatens, but thought I'd get a couple of others just to expand my egg laying flock.

Hey, now I don't feel like the Lone Ranger when it comes to crummy luck at hatching incubated eggs!

I just turned off the incubators and used the hens who are brooding fools ROFL

Yup, the first two look like roos to me, the splash looks like a hen and the wheaten a bit young but may be a hen.

good luck with your flock, its quite fascinating!

Anyone ever had a first Marans Egg that is lacking in 'ink' so to speak? I got my first egg today from my BCM and boy does it need work. Came from some nicely colored eggs from Pink so I am hopeful...
FYI: The bottom of the egg in this pic is a shadow. It does not fade from light to dark... You can see the dark speckles and what I hope is smeared 'ink', and not blood... Next to a penny for reference.
