I don't post here often--mostly lurking and learning.

Explain single mating plz. I think it's knowing both the mother and father of the chick. Is this correct?

Oh another Q. My roosters were born Jun 1 and are chasing the BO and succeeding at their roostering job. Is this a little young or typical for a BC? The BC hens are not laying yet and not of interest to the boys.

What a great surprise!
I started out this summer wanting to get a starter flock of ameraucanas and marans. After many many batches of eggs I managed to get a great little start to my ameraucana flock. But I was disappointed that all I have managed to hatch was one marans chick (pullet) from Peachick. I promised my husband I would not order any more eggs for awhile. So I figured I would have to try again for marans in the spring. I had one last batch of marans eggs in the incubator that I did not have much hope for. I am turning off the incubators after this hatch. Out of 12 I only put 2 eggs into hatcher that I thought had even a slim chance of hatching. Today was the hatch date and it passed without even a pip. I have had many zero hatched due to the rigors of getting eggs here in Hawaii so I was not surprised when it looked like nothing was hatching.
Well guess what happened? One lil tater hatched! A black copper marans!
Now I have two marans to grow up over the winter. And next summer maybe I will have two pullets to lay brown eggs or maybe can hatch some of my own eggs if this one is a rooster. Yay I am stoked!

p.s. I read every post on this thread... just dreaming of the day I would be a black copper marans owner!
