Thanks so much, guys, for all the encouragement. I'm still waiting for the pullets to lay their first eggs. I'm hoping they'll be as dark as the eggs they hatched from. Then next spring, hopefully, Jack will be busy!

Arielle, Sorry I missed your post. Single matings are done so we know exactly which male and female the chicks come from. With most of the Parti-color fowl single mating will cut down on the amount of culls. This wat you can breed different color combinations for males and different ones for female. By single mating in a couple of year you will have a pretty good idea of what to expect from a mating.

The main thing if you single mate you must mark all the chicks and keep records.

Opinions please. I can get free hatching eggs from this Roo and some nice looking hens with pretty heavily feathered shanks. I see some issues with this guy but would like the opinions of the experts.

Thanks Wynette, I see issues with the tail, foot color, lack of feathering on the shanks...what else?? I'm still learning and your input would help in my education.

Hi Rolo! I am not Wynette but will tell you what I see....I agree with you about the tail, foot color...but the other issues I see are the comb, see the twist in the back or how it turns to one side, this is said to be from the Penedesenca blood in some Marans and possibly can be the cause of carnation combs. Also, IMO, he copper colors are too light and he looks like he has alot of Wheaten influence in him. Snowbird will say that the brown fluff color around the back end is also indicitive of Wheaten influence. Do you know what color this guys wing triangle is? Just curious because it cannot be seen in the photo.

Thanks Pink. You taught me something about the comb and I also picked up on the Wheaton influence looking at the feet and thought the copper color was a little light. As far as the wing triange, I don't know as all I have to go by are the pictures I snaped while I was out there and those are the ones posted. Your input is appreciated. Thanks again.

Your Welcome...I didn't do much. But when I first opened this page and saw him without reading your post I immediately thought that he was a Wheaten.

Do you remember what color his wing triangle was.....do you remember if it was cinnamon colored or if it was black? If it was cinnamon colored then he is a Wheaten, but if it was black then he is probably a Black Copper with lots of Wheaten influence and characteristics showing themselves.
Also forgot to mention the shafting in the red breast feathers...this is also said to be indicitive of Wheaten influences.

Oh and was going to metion that it looks as though he has feather stubs down his shank, but they look as though they have been plucked out or pecked out perhaps.

Usually, "you get what you pay for." I agree with Pink, and would add that to me, this boy's hackles are too light, which would make me wonder about Wheaten influence. Also, he's just not an overall pretty picture. Sometimes, it's difficult to tell in pics as you just can't get just the right angle and just the right stance...but, when I look at all three pics, what I keep seeing is an unbalanced picture. It's hard for me to explain, other than that. Sort of like he is somewhat top heavy. He doesn't look very broad in the chest or the back, either. Additionally, again, JMO, NO disrespect intended, but he appears dissheveled as well, which makes me wonder if he's not in the best of health. I am NO expert, these are just some thoughts.
