Black Copper Marans discussion thread

What makes discussing Body and type on BYC is that most have only had chickens less than a year or two at most. On BYC most have their mind made up that they have the best Marans there is to be had and are only wanting to get the good comments and are not interested in any negative comments.

You will hear comments like work with what you have. This is a bunch of Bull as if you start with junk you are going to be working with junk. If you start with a small narrow body bird it is vertually impossible to put the correct sketal frame on the bird. No one wants to start over once they have bought their initial Fowl.

There is no way with the quality of Marans out there available for sale that you can buy a dozen eggs and start a breeding program the the brothers and sisters. Brother and sister matings will destroy any breeding program. If you have a real top of the line of show fowl the brother and sister matings can be made, but not by beginners.

Just a little more food for thought. Ask any of the people showing and winning with show fowl at present if they made their line of fowl or bought good fowl to start with.

Buy good fowl and find out how to breed them forward when you purchase them. Very few breeder made lines of modern day being showed. The best way is find a real good line from someone that will help you get started.

You will see someone winning every show they enter for a couple of years and then nothing, you absolutely have to know how to breed the birds forward. If you have no idea of the concept of breeding poultry for the SOP you will fail without a doubt.

Good word Don.

Look around at the Marans posted on BYC and you will see very few with the right body structure and overall type. It is a must for anyone looking to study type of poultry to have a copy of the SOP.

The only real good body and type Marans I have seen on BYC belong to Vicki and she has a long history of being around Show Poultry. I also like the Black Marans male belonging to Kim.

Once you see a good Marans if you keep an open mind you will know what to look for in the future.

Anyone wanting a critique on your Marans. Take a picture from both sides, front and one from above. State in the post you want an honest opinion and can handle the results. For the folks that want to argue about the results, just remember you asked for the opinions.

edited to ad, also take a picture from the rear so we can see the spred of the tail.

Only 2 out of my flock are BC marans. 1 is a young hen & the other a young Roo. The roo was born brown & all the others out of the batch were black. Has anyone ever seen this before? These are the 1st Marans ive owned. The guy i got them from was just going to kill the brown 1 because it was different & none of his others have ever been brown when hatched. They were both supposed to be hens too lol.

I disagree. I have been to several shows, seen judges INDIVIDUALLY judge Marans, and there are more than two folks who participate on BYC who have good ones, in my opinion.

Most definitely a copy of the SOP is imperative, if you are breeding to standard. I would go so far as to say - don't bother posting pictures until you have one, as there is no way we can help you - we would be pointing you to the SOP for specifics and for examples, and if you do not have one, it's pointless to ask for feedback. Again, JMO.
