Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Perhaps now would be a good time for a change in subject.... How about chick photos?

Come on.... You know if you have some fluffy butts at home, you are dying to show them off....

I got TWO marans eggs yesterday. It was the first time in TWO Weeks that the girls have laid ANY eggs...
Maybe I will be setting eggs again soon. The last hatch is coming out of the incubator.
I have eggs and will pull out the incubator today and get it warmed up. I should go check for eggs today and get some photos of my pre-fluffy butts! (does that count as "counting your chickens before they hatch"?

Quote: That is true, the longer the egg stays in the hen, usually, the darker the egg is. That said, if a hen lays every day, she won't lay a very dark egg, so its a toss up as to what one wants...a lot of eggs or some really dark eggs.. Now, if only there were hens that laid a
#7 every day...that would be heaven!

Amen !!!

Ohio National Marans show. The judge at this show is one of the most respected Poultry Breeders and Judge in the U>S>A. I thought it was more that exhibitors didn't know what was going on and were trying to sway the Judge. If the Judge would of just removed everyone from the area there would not of been the fiasco that happened. This happened mostly because most exhibitors were new and didn't know what was going on. This behavior is normal when most start out showing.

Well... still no eggs. I am so eager to get my Marans males and females together. I still have to wait for the 'real' eggs not just pullet eggs. Anticipation is supposed to be fun but this isn't.

No one answered me about the reason for terra cotta vs chocolate. Anyone?

From what I have observed the Terra Cotta eggs are lower number eggs on the scale usually under #5 on the Marans chart.

The "global" (i.e., British) standard spell these words with an 's' whereas the American standard uses 'z' as in, for instance, 'hybridize' vs. 'hybridise.' At times I think it looks strange when I see a word spelled that way ('organisation'), but I guess people in Canada, Australia, the UK etc. feel the same about our spelling. What really irritates me, though, is when I see British spelling used to gain some sort of "upper class" snob appeal status (harbour, centre, theatre, metre, and -- worst of all -- cancelled as opposed to canceled). So MELANIZE works fine, go for it. Happy New Year.

So here are the eggs (pre-Fuzzy Butts) I have gathered in the past week for hatching. Think I will wait another week so that I have a good number of eggs before I set. I fear between the cold weather and young age of some of my hens fertility may be low.

WOW ...... those are some nice dark eggs ..... Congrats !! What number do you think they are ? Thanks , Shannon

This pullet I am referring to with the white ear is the most camera shy thing I have come across... except the Dorking cockerel. I can't get near him for much of anything unless its in the dark barn where not pic can be taken anyway.

I have pullets here who should be at pol and yet... no eggs, not even one. Its terribly cold here and only a few birds of the many are laying but I have to ask again just to reassure myself: Marans pol is typically when? I keep seeing everyone else's avatar pics of incredibly chocolatey eggs (as opposed to the terra cotta which are also lovely) and I think I have egg envy. Why the difference in terra cotta and chocolate? I have heard some of the varieties lay darker than others. Is there truth to this?
The difference is mostly due to genetics. Some of the varieties that lay darker in general are Black and Blue coppers. The silver cuckoos in general tend to lay light with all the other varieties being in between. This will vary between breeders. Some people think it varies between specific lines. but most of the 'lines' have been so far removed from the original breeder that I don't put much stock in what lines do what anymore. Terra cotta eggs tend to have a reddish tint to them. Some eggs can be pretty dark and still have a red tint to them. One of my solid black pullets lays a pretty decent darker red egg.
