Egg fertility question... Hen has been in with Cockeral for 2 weeks, she was finishing up a light molt and not laying. Laid her first egg today, should it be fertile? If they have been laying,
3rd or 4th egg should be fertile after bred, correct?

In my experience, yes, this is true. VERY seldom is the very first egg fertile. There's a chance #2 will be, but more than likely, by the ones after that, they will be. It's not recommended that you hatch pullet eggs...I wait at the very least, a month before hatching pullet eggs and typically I wait much longer. JMO.

Oh, sorry Wynette, she's a hen, I hatched over 75 eggs from her last year :) This is her first egg since the molt!

OH, goodness. I was wondering if my "molt" you were meaning her last juvie molt. Sorry! If that's the case, I bet her first egg IS fertile!

We got home from The Bluebonnet Classic late on Saturday evening. We spent most of yesterday unloading chickens and equipment once we got home from Church. The Bluebonnet is always a nice show. This year there were 115 Marans entered representing 11 different varieties. There were 10 different exhibitors there. We had a great time. I think that the complete results and pictures have been uploaded on the Marans Chicken Club U.S.A. Yahoo Group.

We had Best of Variety with a Black Copper pullet that came back to be Best of Breed and Best Continental. Two of her sisters were second and third in the Black Copper Pullet class. We had a great day visiting with old friends and making new ones. Now we will be at home for a couple of weeks before heading out to The Ft. Worth Livestock Show at the end of the month.

Congrats on the show, what r the dates of the Fort Worth show

Wynette, I read with interest your post on not breeding pullets for flock replacement. Until I got involved with the Marans I never ever use a pullet for breeding purposes. I have always like for the young female to go through at least one winter before using in the breeding pen. This way I could check the liveability of my fowl before adding the chicks to my program. This way we would end up carrying over a few extra birds to be used later. I always thought it was still a good policy.
