Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Our Black Copper Marans have quit laying on us in the last week. They are not moulting, they have just stopped laying completely when all of our other breeds have increased production. They are in three different pens so I don't think it's something to do with their pens. Help! I want my dark brown eggs back. :(

My Marans seem to lay in cycles. They will lay really well for a few months and then..... almost stop..... then start back up where they left off. I have learned to hatch while I can. Last year, mine stopped about this time too. So far mine are still laying like crazy. 10-13 eggs a day from 16 pullets/hens

That's awesome for winter. Our are laying maybe an egg a DAY from 9 hens/pullets. We haven't had one in a couple of days either.

Quote: Split wing in Silkies is an acutally separating of the wing in the middle, so you can see where there is a split in the middle. The feathers are supposed to be all folded together, without a separation. Like the primaries are hanging down & there is a "split" that is obvious. I hope this is clear...

The only time that we have seen this is at shows. It has always been a DQ. I have never seen it in our Breed Standard. I can only assume that it is a DQ regardless to what breed it is.

X2 In the SOP it is listed under General Disqualifications for all breeds.

Thank you; I was pretty sure it was a DQ. I will try and get some pics of this bird later today and add them here, just so you can tell me if that is what the problem is for sure.

OK here are some pics of the bird I was talking about. He is about 3 months old.
You can see in this pic the white wing tips peaking out by his tail.

Here is a wing spread out. That was really hard to get all by myself!

Other side

Now if this is split wing, the question is, is this genetic or could it be an incubation/hatching problem? This guy was from shipped eggs and got shrink wrapped. He was stuck about 24 hours , even tho I was wetting the membrane. I finally had to pull some of the membrane and shell off so he could finish getting out. If this is genetic, do we know how it goes? I mean is it a simple thing to get rid of or is it one of those things that gets worse over generations like sprigs?
