Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Ragnar means 'Rock.' I knew someone with the nickname and now it is the name of our Pomeranian goose. Nice to know other people appreciate good norse names :)

Well, I *think* I might have a precocious BCM. One does have a pretty red comb and the boys have been chasing her. Yesterday I found the little egg on the right and today I found the slightly bigger one on the left.

The only other girls in the pen are BRxBO crosses, a couple of which have been laying for a while. But never this dark.

Two of my Marans have seemed to stop laying all of a sudden. Its either that or their eggs are invisible. Any ideas? They were doing great and all of a sudden na-da. I haven't seen them sitting either, although they still squat so I am not too worried about them being egg bound but I know of no other reason for them to do this. Both pullets about the same age.

Ahhh, the wonderful world of Marans..they stop, they start, all when it moves them. I'm having a sudden surge in eggs, after almost nothing for a few weeks.

I have read almost all of this thread and I've seen people talk about what you should look for in Roos but what about hens? Or is all the desired traits the same as the Roos? ( exept for egg color)

Ok, here is something, is it true that the more white the chick has on it, the better chance it's a roo? Because EVERY time I've had a blcm chicks with more white it ends up being a male. Am I the only one??
I have also heard of this. I had 8 BCM chicks and the males all had more white on their head area than the pullets did. Turned out 5 out of the 8 were roos.
