Black Copper Marans discussion thread

;-) I'd thought of posting before :) but was never sure what I should say, since I am a complete newbie, whose chicks are going though their 'fuglies' in the extreme... So I guess I should say 'hi' too.... I can't wait till I'm not such a newbie ;-)

While I"ve had chickens for a lot of years of my life I only heard of BCM about a year ago and spent months trying to find some close to me! I got these in Nov/Dec. The first rounds of culling roos was easy, had some real ugly boys that were no where near close to the SOP. This round is tougher because they all have different strengths and weaknesses. This forum has been invaluable to me; BTW I have read this thread and the regular Marans thread from the beginning; copy & paste important bits into a Word file to reread later.

The copy/pasting is what I'm doing/been doing :-D

I figure, I got my chicks from locals, although maybe not the top breeders around, they were what I could get, and one they are grown out I can go hunting for what I need to complement.... If I don't have a decent roo out of my 13 or so chicks....

I knew enough from reading here that when I saw flaming orange boys on craigslist that they were not anywhere near the SOP. But I am still new to this and trying to remember everything, especially little details like checking eyes, ears, middle toes.... is hard.

They hate me with a passion, so the only way I can get a clear pic is to pin them down, I hate doing it, but they will freak, and hurt them selves if I don't. It does seem that the heavily feathered one has a wider tail.

I have some supposedly cottage hill line BCM's and so far they all have had white feathers that disappeared when they matured... its' kinda weird, some of them even had feathers that are half white
and half black. I really like them actually they seem to have larger heads and a little higher station than the wade jean ones that i have. The pullets have nice copper too.. wish i had more of them. You can see pics in my ad at the bottom of the page.

My rooster had them as well ( different strain then the pullets ) and I was really worried because I knew they weren't supposed to, but they all disappeared, so I'm hoping that's what happens with them.

Black Copper Marans thread....

My goal is to end up with a decent rooster this year. I have several growing, but so far this guy looks like my best bet. Yet, to keep from becoming a "sound blight" to my neighbor, I don't want to hang onto boys who do not have potential.

I'm pretty much just starting (and starting over at that!). So, I'm looking for a nice boy to get started with.

This guy is 13 weeks old.

I originally thought these feet were yellow, but they seem more pinkish now. Otherwise, I understand that with yellow bottoms he would be a no-no. right?

His eyes seem kind of greenish with brown speckles. It's a bit early to tell on that, right?

Any thoughts? I have more pictures if there are questionable things. Does anything horrible obviously jump out or is he worth keeping around to see how he grows?

Thank you so much! It's been learning from the critiques of the birds that have been recently been posted.
