Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Marans put the color pigment on the outside of the egg after the shell is formed. That is why the color can get scratched off.

Other "brown" egg layers have the pigment already in the shell material so they don't build up layers like Marans do.

it is funny that of all the breeds and egg colors I get, ONLY the Marans have these type of eggs any only SOME eggs get chalky and rough feeling.

I left one on the floor in the run for a day or two just to see what happened and it has turned completely white!! Maybe the weird ones occur based on the hen but are more susceptible to the effects of laying on the floor, because i do find unaffected ones on the floor too.. BTW I get it in both my wheatens and my black coppers..

Found one today....bleh!

This is supposed to be a BCM pullet about 8-10 weeks old (guess). Do you think it's looking a little roo'ish? The light green eyes bothered me from the beginning, but it is bigger than the others and...I dunno...giving me that feeling of ROO. Supposed to be Bev Davis and Wade Jeane lines, bought from a breeder.

Not a roo, that would be evident at that age. The eyes I'm not sure if they will darken some.

Ok BC Marans breeders...I hatched out eggs from a different line to build some bulk and darken eggs in my flock. The chicks from these eggs were huge. But...now I'm seeing yellow on the bottoms of the feet...should I breed forward with this line trying to breed the yellow out? Or is this a deal breaker? Anyone know of it is a DQ?

how old are the chicks? Babies can have yellow feet/legs for awhile from absorbing the yolk sac, is what I have read...

Definitely a pullet. Give her eyes time, she is still quite young and they will probably darken.

Wait and see, the yellow may disappear by the time they reach about 4 months. I've had some that did. If it hasn't disappeared by the time they start to lay, it's a deal breaker- move them to a layer flock do not breed.

if they are as month old with yellow legs that and their siblings are out of here. yellow legs in young chicks is ok they can be yellow from the yolk but beyond that it is unacceptable. birds with yellow legs can go pale almost white. no way would I breed a bird in my Marans they ever had yellow legs as a juvies.

Good to know thanks Donna. Just to clarify as it didn't quite seem to type out right, "if they are as month old with yellow legs that and their siblings are out of here." If they are how old?
