Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I have a FBCM I got from a breeder on eBay from hatching eggs. She has a black comb? Looks like the back 1/3 is starting to get red but the rest is black. Is that normal?!
It will get red eventually. Usually those pullets with black combs & faces redden up eventually, but its a sign of over melanization. They probably won't have much copper on their hackles.

it is funny that of all the breeds and egg colors I get, ONLY the Marans have these type of eggs any only SOME eggs get chalky and rough feeling.

I had NO clue what this discussion was about....until this morning. Saw a whitish egg on coop floor, thought it was a soft shell (most of my birds are only 22 wks old, & I have gotten 3 of those since they started laying 6 wks ago. I know that is not unusual when they are young & just getting started, even with making sure they have plenty of OS available).

When I went in to retrieve, realized it was a "chalky" layer. When washed off (& it all washed off easily) could tell it was one of Maia's eggs. I, too, have found my Marans' eggs in the nest box, coop floor, bed of weeds, middle of the lawn, wherever, & this is the first time getting a chalky (mind you, I have only gotten ~ 2 1/2 doz from my FBCM pullets (~ 27 wks old) thus far...).

Interesting...haven't broken it open to see if it is "normal"...

Thank you x2. This is helpful to me too. Is there anything else that this means as far as the rest of her genetics? I have one that is partially black and one that is all black.

Is it true you can tell if its a girl or boy by the size of the white spots beside there face one has large spots and the other tiny spots
