Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Very nice rooster, I notice on your tag that you list Nigerian Dwarf doeling, that is my next step, as soon as I have fenced off some area for a couple of them. How do you like the ND and do you find it expensive to have them?

I enjoy them so far. I have only had them since june and got them as 8 and 10 week olds. They are pretty easy to maintain so far and the cost at the moment is very low, their diet consists of mostly hay.

So... Here is my Bcm cockerel I'm currently growing out. He's 12 weeks old. I'm really new(just 3 months) into Bcm's but want to breed to sop if I can manage with out breaking the bank

... Hard work doesn't bother me

... So I'm just starting to train my eye. Right now I'm looking for any critiques... Good, bad, and/or ugly....

Am I correct in that it seems that his tail set is kinda high/upright?

Wow I have a couple of 12 week old BCM roos and your looks so much older and mature. He is a very Handsome Rooster. Are you sure on his age?

OOPS.... Lol

..... Guess he's 14 weeks... I was counting months... He was hatched the last Sunday in may... So by that it would be 3 months, but 14 weeks .... Cause there's more than 28days in a month... Duh... Lol

The tail is a DQ because it is a squirrel tail.

The back of male is wrong too. The SOP calls for a

BACK: Wide at the shoulders, long, flat, slightly tilted to the rear. Slightly more inclined than that of the female.
Saddle feathers -- abundant, saddle large and slightly raised.

This is not the male that you want to start your breeding program with.

OBTW: Those in a position to talk to the SOP writers, I think this statement should be changed to read either ...

Slightly tilted downward to the rear
OR
Slightly tilted upward to the rear

I thought I would jump into this thread I have had Marans for almost a year and I love them. The eggs are a great assortment to the egg basket each day. One of my FBCM just went broody and is sitting on 6 eggs

.

I was wondering what you all thought of my Young FBCM rooster he is roughly 14 weeks old. I am going to keep him as a back up rooster to my older Marans rooster and for now give him his own pen with OE and EE.

this is Rebel

What about mine, any thoughts?
