I will post as soon as I know..

I think our interpretation of the French was the problem.... My understanding is that the French hasn't changed in a long time... I believe it was 1991... Lots gets lost in translation I think. could be wrong.

Sue... do you have any birds in the competition?? IF so what variety??? (and good luck to you)...any eggies?

I wanted to pick the brain of some more experienced BCM breeders. I have five seventeen week old pullets.
Two have been showing good color in their hackles for some time and overall are looking very promising.
One is rather mossy but still looks pretty nice otherwise. I am going to move her in with my laying flock.
Two are showing no color at all in their hackles.
My question involves the pair that appear as though they are going to be all black.
They do not look overly black other wise. The eyes are colored like the other pullets, which are orangish. the legs are slate, and beaks are horned colored.
Will I be able to correct the lack of hackle color easily?
Any advise would be welcome.

Foggelly, I have the issue of overmelanised (overly black - not enough copper in the hackles) hens, too. I'm going to be choosing two cockerels this year that have a bit of "extra" copper coloring - more than what I typically breed for (which is solid black chest). My hope is that this will correct the hens for my next go-round.

Fogelly: One should not eliminate or set in stone choices of younstock until their form is fully achieved... The mossy is a culling point in adults..not necessarily in breeding stock or youngstock.

Thanks for the advice.
It is hard to be patient. I don't know when it happened but I seem to have been bitten by some sort of BCM obsession. I went from just getting a few, because my six year old son wanted those chickens that lay chocolate eggs, to some strung out Marans dude. I have had chickens for most of my life (mostly RIR,and BR) and have thirty to forty at any given time. I have never been eaten up like this. I need to watch it or it may lead to an intervention.

It is okay... You don't need an intervention... you need another fix...

I have two roosters that are also young that show promise. One has good copper color and some flaking on the chest (less than 10%). The other is more dark. Maybe they will provide for both of my needs.
This is a great forum I have learned a lot just reading the post.
