Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I was so excited to find our first Black Copper egg today!! My girls are just turning six months old.

In the photo I have placed the egg on dry ground coffee for color comparisons. I do wish the egg was as dark as some of the deep dark ones I've seen here, but it's what I have so to me, it's GREAT!

Very pretty. Disclaimer: coffee colors will vary.

It will be good to compare her later eggs with the same white plate in the future though!

I don't think the mossiness will go away, especially if it's a lot and shows up young. Seems like I read of someone that had birds with just a little bit that did molt it out, but I'm not sure about that.

I *think* it is that they don't have enough melanizer to cover up the color with black; hopefully some of the other folks with more experience and genetics knowledge will answer when they recover from their turkey day coma ;-)
I've had white go away, and some pullets turn up with a black breast after showing some mossiness at 4 months but these chicks have it on wings and all kinds of places.. just goes to show that two correct birds don't always make correct chicks, Oh well... time for me to go back to my original rooster who produced some great chicks but had some faults...

i'm interested in this genetically though...I have tried to research it but most articles just talk about a bunch of nondescript melanizers there has to be something more specific known than this...

Very Nice

The eggs may get darker later on, that is very dark for the first egg. Our Buff Orp first egg was much lighter tinted than they were later on!
