Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Quick question...... what color should BCM's legs be? I have 6, and all but one have dark legs. There is one cockerel with yellow legs and lighter feathering.
Yellow legs are a definite problem..... would make me wonder wha'ts hiding under the slate in the others.... look at the bottom of their feet. They shouldn't look yellow.

are its legs yellow or more white? and is that the only obvious difference in appearance than the others with the darker legs

They are yellow, and yes it is the only one with a difference. I am going to put all but one of the cockerels in the freezer. I will try my best to get pictures of all of them tomorrow, and see which one you all think is my best one.

If they ALL hatched from the same set of eggs.... I would not breed any of them. Yellow legs are recessive and can hide when birds only have one copy. I would guess that ALL your birds carry yellow legs and when breed to each other would just produce more yellow legs...... If you are going to use them as layers only that would be ok but do NOT sell them as marans as they have been mixed with something else.

II have a roo that has pretty light colored legs and very few leg feathers. How light is too light?

As long as they are slate colored your fine. Keep in Mind you don't want them to light or to dark. Your never going to find the perfect chicken.
