Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I hatched this BCM pullet from a supposedly pure BCM egg. Can you get birds like this from good lines, or is she mixed?

BCMs are still a work in progress even the "good" lines have constant faults in them. If we go by the american standard for this breed, this BCM lacks feathered shanks and just for that would be considered "poor" quality. I don't think she's mixed maybe she just had major red leakage.

I have seen that patterning on MANY Olive Eggers I have hatched.... never seen it on any Marans of the over 500 I have hatched.... My guess is the comb is a modified pea comb..... Olive Egger.

I had one like this but not as much leakage. the one on the left

Very hard to tell Olive Eggers and Marans apart at hatch. Someone could have used one in their marans breeding. I have hatched LITERALLY HUNDREDS if not close to a 1,000 and NEVER had a Marans that looked like that.

From a distance, she doesn't seem too mossy, but up close, there is mossy leakage patterns all over her wings plus random speckles. It's too bad...she's built like a solid brick. lol

I have a Wheaten Maran rooster and last spring I bred him to Black Copper hens. The offspring ranged from solid black to black copper to wheaten. These are a couple of the hens that were produced by that cross.

My question is can the hen in the first photo be honestly called a Black Copper Maran?
