Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I hope so. I'm new to chicken keeping and the recent waddle/comb development has gotten me crazy. I'm suspecting roosters in every chick.

Just got 2 BCMs and looking forward to seeing what they look like. For me I was interested in the dark brown eggs. Enjoying learning more about these birds.

Hello all! Here's a picture of the little fella I'm considering keeping. His brothers are not as colorful as he is. My question is is this normal coloring for a 9 week old cockerel? Or does he have too much red/orange? Just wondering. :)

I don't think that is a Marans. He is colored wrong all over and he is lacking a tail. My guess is he is a cross of some sort.Nothing looks like a marans other than the feathered legs.

WAY too much. Are you sure he is pure Marans? Do you have photos of the others?

I saw the parent stock and they were normal looking to me...but I'm no Marans expert. I also have the really light colored pullet? from the same hatching.
And sorry the pic are not the greatest.
I got the eggs from a fella that lives a few miles from us and he said that his birds came from the Wade Jeane line.

Quote: They might be 15 generations away from the original breeder so they are NOT Wade Jeane lines and have not been since they left his hands.

That light colored girl in the middle? she is really mossy. If it was me I would not use any of these birds. too much hidden in the wood pile there. You could try with the more normal looking birds but I would think the same issues would pop up in the next generation.

He really does have a tail....i guess he was standing funky. At 9 weeks old all of the chicks are looking kinda scruffy with new feathers growing here and there. They are supposed to be pure...maybe he's a mutant? The eggs they came from were nice and dark.

I'm sorry. I must have misrepresented myself. I have no intentions of continuing this "line" of Marans. I'm simply using the hens for variety in the egg basket and I will use whichever roo I keep to cover my EE 's to make olivers, which are nothing but mutts anyway.
So, thanks for the insight. I knew I came to the right place.

I shall name her Mossy. :) hopefully she will lay nice eggs for me.
