Really.....you don't think that another Marans thread wouldn't be too much?

I kinda do....

Wow I love his back! I have some girls with nice long backs but most of my males have higher tails and normal backs grrr. The one male I have with a nice tailset and back is the overmelanized boy. Not what I need with my dark hens LOL!

Ohh a blue copper thread or any blue thread would be fun! I love the blues. I am so happy with one of my bbs blue pullets she is turning out to look just like Cacao, her mother, but with even nicer lacing! I really noticed it yesterday when I picked her (the daughter) up outside in the sun. She has lacing on her back and wings not just her front. Cacao has one of those dark heads and the rest solid blue with lacing on her front. I have been trying to get babies that look like her.

Posted BV girl on marans thread... Not the best angle but I am grateful for the picture.. She really is a nice looking hen...

Question for you since you work with the Blues- we have another breed that is blue and we were wondering how you go about deciding which blue chicks to keep- we have some that are lighter blue and others that are a bit darker- also what age do you keep them to before making that decision? We have some that are coming up on 8 weeks old. Do you also keep black and splash to use for breeding pens, if you do how do you decide who to keep? I asked this on the other thread but have gotten no responses back yet.

I don't decide based on the blue... I decide based on the shape of the bird and then I match the male that will balance it out.. The female was a lavender type blue that was weak... so the proper response was to use Black Copper.. Not only did it strengthen the blue lacing but it also put a strong copper on the neck... I have found it takes two crossings to make a good collar on a hen.

, I was hoping that maybe if I could learn about these blues, that some of the great info could be applied to our other blues we currently have......

You bet... This is what I have been saying all along... Bev didn't start with good birds.. she MADE them ... that is why we have such good birds today.... We complain about we need some better specimens... Use what you have I say... Look at it and fix it... It serves two-fold.. one It is less expensive than ship and cull and two: It teaches us about recordkeeping and crossing for improvement.... I always advocate for the hands on approach.... Of course with proper guidance... not willy nilly...
