Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Am I wrong or is this bird a Cuckoo Marans? I'm thinking a couple of my "Black and Blue" coppers are really Cuckoos, too.

@magdelaine Wasn't really sure of the differences but looked up pics of cuckoo marans and they seem to have a lot more white specks on them. Maybe a cross between the two? Also cuckoo marans don't seem to have feathery legs.

Not a cuckoo cross either. Cuckoo is barring not specks. not as crisp as like a barred rock but barring none the less. A cross would either be barred or not depending on the cross (you can make sex links with barred birds of any kind)

That is a lot of white on that birds...... hum..... the coloring is not right on her (yes that is a pullet) Usually more white means copper but that is just too much..... almost looks mottled.

No that is not a cuckoo.

I had to look up mottled. Yeah it does look like that on her front but her back feathers and tail are completely black and she has a couple wing feathers that are completely white. Quite a lot of white on her face too. That's ok, I like unique. :)

How soon do BCMs start showing copper? This little one hatched out 4 days ago and he has coppery fuzz over his beak and cheeks.

I looked at the eBay ad and I saw a roo with barring. This seller doesn't seem to cull any hens or roos that don't fit the standard because a breed comes from a good line it doesn't mean you should stop improving it. I did see some nice birds in there too though.

@magdelaine one of my chicks showed some copper fuzz on her sides when she was just days old too. They change a lot when their feathers come out. It's hard to predict what they will look like when they are only days old.

This chick looks to be over melanized and will probably not have much copper as an adult. Mossiness tends to be on over melanized birds.
